{"id":283,"date":"2026-09-03T11:21:23","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T15:21:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/boreadecouverte.com\/beyond-conifers-the-olfactory-surprise-of-the-boreal-forest\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T11:21:23","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T15:21:23","slug":"beyond-conifers-the-olfactory-surprise-of-the-boreal-forest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/boreadecouverte.com\/en\/beyond-conifers-the-olfactory-surprise-of-the-boreal-forest\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond Conifers: The Olfactory Surprise of the Boreal Forest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>When Perfumers Rediscover the Boreal Forest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We thought we knew the boreal forest.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It is a phrase we heard more than once during a week spent with perfumers from Paris who came to discover BoreA D\u00e9couVERTE and Qu\u00e9bec&#8217;s boreal forest.<\/p>\n<p>Like many fragrance professionals, they expected to encounter the great northern classics: Black Spruce, Balsam Fir and Jack Pine\u2014a resinous, fresh and familiar olfactory palette.<\/p>\n<p>They were far from imagining everything the forest still had to reveal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An Olfactory Palette Still Largely Unknown<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>North America&#8217;s boreal forest remains relatively underrepresented in the palette of perfumers around the world.<\/p>\n<p>A perfumer&#8217;s role is to imagine and compose the fragrances found not only in fine perfumes, but also in many everyday products such as cosmetics, personal care products, candles, home fragrances, soaps and detergents. To create these distinctive olfactory signatures, perfumers are constantly searching for new natural raw materials that bring originality, emotion and character to their creations.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond its conifers, the boreal forest is home to a remarkable diversity of aromatic plants, many of which remain virtually unexplored by the fragrance industry. Labrador Tea, Sweet Gale, Sweetfern, Balsam Poplar and Goldenrod are just a few examples of botanical treasures that offer perfumers an exciting and largely untapped olfactory palette.<\/p>\n<p>Over five days, our guests explored nearly thirty essential oils, hydrosols and botanical extracts produced from iconic boreal plants. Each discovery broadened their perception of the boreal forest and opened new creative possibilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An Experience That Engages All the Senses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Discovering the boreal forest is about far more than simply smelling it.<\/p>\n<p>It is also about touching it, listening to it&#8230; and tasting it.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the week, our guests handled the plants, explored their textures, walked through forest trails, witnessed a live distillation, collected freshly distilled hydrosols and discovered the landscapes that shape our region.<\/p>\n<p>They also shared meals inspired by the boreal forest, featuring wild game, mushrooms, culinary hydrosols, conifer-flavoured cookies and craft beers brewed with boreal botanicals such as Labrador Tea, Sweet Gale and Green Alder.<\/p>\n<p>Each activity shared the same purpose: to demonstrate that these plants are much more than raw materials They are the expression of a territory, a climate and a culture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Forest That Tells a Story<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beyond the olfactory discoveries, this immersive experience offered a deeper understanding of the relationships between the forest, local communities and northern industries.<\/p>\n<p>Our guests discovered our circular economy model, observed how forest biomass is transformed into value, witnessed the production of essential oils and met the women and men who work in this remarkable environment every day. They also explored the surrounding landscapes, visited the Ouj\u00e9-Bougoumou Cultural Institute Museum and hiked through the boreal forest.<\/p>\n<p>Because understanding an essential oil also means understanding the forest from which it comes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The First of Many More to Come<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This visit marks an important milestone for BoreA D\u00e9couVERTE.<\/p>\n<p>It confirms that Qu\u00e9bec&#8217;s boreal forest possesses a unique olfactory identity that remains largely undiscovered by perfumers around the world.<\/p>\n<p>It also demonstrates that BoreA D\u00e9couVERTE is far more than a visitor destination.
